What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?

Four college-age friends wrote a list of 100 things they wanted to experience before they died — and took off in a Winnebago to do them. Along the way they asked other people, “what do you want to do before you die?” For each item they accomplished on their own list, they helped a stranger accomplish their own dream. They helped a lonely man in San Francisco cope with a terminal illness by brightening his modest apartment with plants, paintings, and a new bed. They taught break-dancing to a woman in Idaho, and bought computers for an in-need school in Compton, CA. They discovered that helping someone else’s dream come true was far more satisfying than accomplishing their own goals. Now they are inspiring others with a new series on MTV! Modest Needs: Small Gifts, Big Impact

Gary Ribble would not be able to read this story if not for people like you. Ribble, who has chronic lymphocytic leukemia in addition to severe diabetes and impaired hearing, needed new eyeglasses last spring but couldn’t afford them after losing a job he’d held for more than 40 years. Then he found out about the Modest Needs Foundation. The grass-roots charity pools thousands of small donations to help people get through short-term financial crises, with donors directly choosing the requests that move them…. Within a week, eleven visitors to modestneeds.org had pitched in, and Ribble, who lives in a trailer in Nappanee, Indiana, received a $364 check that changed his life.
